garden???

I would like to do more in the garden this year, but am not really sure when to start everything. So for anyone out there that knows, let me know. I read somewhere yesterday that it is ok to start potatoes and onion sets now, is that true, seems a little(???) early to me. And then when do I start everything else? Just the wonderings of a new gardener.
